Using Water Crystals-A Dynamic Approach

Water saving crystals are not an alternative to watering your vegie plants though they can save you on days when you are really busy. They can be used both in the ground or in containers. In this post, I will be showing you how water-storing crystals work and how you can use them to obtain impressive results in your vegetable patch.

Using water-saving crystals strategically can help produce results like this.

How they work

The obvious value of water storage crystals is in their ability to absorb water that would otherwise sink below the root level and be lost to the plant. The crystals themselves are not unlike sugar grains in size, but once pregnant with fluid, they expand one hundred fold or more. They must be used carefully especially in containers, as too much can cause puffing which may displace the soil and sometimes even the plant.Their other value is when you are busy or away. Swollen water crystals can provide nourishment to your plant for long periods depending on how they are dispersed in the soil. However it is advisable to check and water your plants regularly even if you have applied water storing crystals.

Strategic Use

Once you become more comfortable using water storing crystals, try to be a little more adventurous.Rather than using plain old water, think about other solutions that can make your plants take off spectacularly. After all, if you can get your plants off to a healthy start, they will soon take off and grow rapidly while fighting off diseases in the process. This is bound to produce spectacular results. Also vary the depth and type of fluid being held in the crystals. Some suggestions are seaweed solution, fish emulsion, blood and bone solution and compost tea. These will act as a tonic to the plant. Plants which have edible leaves should have access to nitrogen contained in fish emulsion. Tomatoes will respond better to seaweed solution initially and blood and bone as fruiting nears

Value of Water-Storing crystals in Container-Gardening

When growing vegetables in a container, it is important to remember that with only minimal soil, containers are susceptible to drying out rapidly. Using water crystals in combination with mulch is a valuable way of holding water.
When the crystals are holding fish-emulsion, seaweed solution or compost tea then a whole new world opens up with endless possibilities.
